The holidays are approaching and I HAD to share this amazing recipe with you that was passed down from my husband’s grandma to him! The original recipe wasn’t vegan so I veganized it and it tastes exactly the same!

I first had traditional Coquito back in 2013 when I met my husband, he always brought a bottle with him to all the holiday parties, and everyone who tasted it begged for more. Since going vegan I never attempted to veganize it, but I felt like I couldn’t have another Thanksgiving or Christmas without it!

This recipe is so easy and I promise you’ll want to make it every holiday!

What’s coquito?

Coquito is a Puerto Rican drink traditionally made with cream of coconut, coconut milk, condensed milk, egg yolks, and spices, sometimes called Puerto Rican Eggnog.

How did I veganize the original Coquito recipe?

Look below how I substituted the main non-vegan ingredients:

  • Condensed milk: I used coconut condensed milk which is not only vegan but absolutely delicious and creamy! Give it a try if you haven't yet. Also, since the condensed milk is made from coconut it added an extra layer of coconut flavor.

  • Evaporated milk: Although there’s vegan evaporated milk you can find online, I decided to use oat milk instead which is also creamy and very neutral in taste.

  • Egg yolk: A lot of Coquito recipes actually don’t have egg yolks so I didn’t substitute it with anything since the mix is thick and creamy without it.

The original recipe called for Bacardi White Rum, but I decided to give it a little Dominican twist with Brugal Añejo.

Easy step-by-step instructions with video

  1. In a blender add the oat milk, cream of coconut, condensed milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and blend until creamy.

  2. Add ¾ cup of rum, blend, and taste, add another ¼ cup of rum if you prefer it a little stronger.

  3. Pour the mixture and a few cherries into a glass jar with an airtight lid and refrigerate until cold.

  4. To serve, shake the Coquito and pour over ice or by itself.

How long does Coquito last in the fridge?

Coquito can last forever in the fridge, usually 4 – 6 months, but trust me you will drink it all way before that!

Make sure you store the Coquito in a glass container with an airtight lid. I found the ones I used at a discount store but you can also find them on Amazon.

Shake well before serving since the cream of coconut can form a cap on top.

Relax, bake, enjoy!
